Installment #2: Being a musician (I apply the term reverently, if not entirely supportably), I have this bad, almost involuntary proclivity for hearing song hooks, sort of musical word associations for any specific situation, that aren't necessarily always appropriately applied in spiritual contexts. But since I have absolutely no control over this (humor), here's the hook that won't leave me alone in this discussion: "Your the One That I Want", from the movie, Grease. I know -- abominable, right? And yet, as Larry Norman once said, "Why should the devil have all the good music?"...or chorus hooks? Applied to the One whom my fullest and deepest attention should belong, I find this lyric and thought wonderfully redeemable. In this light, therefore...
I (further) want:
-to rest in a holistic trust in the Lord, so that I don't stress in the as-yet-incompletes and the seemingly unfixables in and of my life;
-to desire and choose to honor God in my daily walk, over letting my natural inclinations and weaknesses prevail;
-to pursue the Lord and His kingdom with undeterred and spirit-filled resolve, but tempered with patience, kindness, and humility;
-to discern the precious from the vile (Jeremiah 15:19) in all my thoughts and dealings.
I could list more, but I don't...wait for it...want to. That is, I've realized that if what I want above all else is the One that I want -- Jesus -- then my wants will become His wants. Then, I will begin to understand, and even live out, what the Psalmist known as David once wrote, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1). Now there's a (shepherd's) hook worth repeating!
Yep, that's what I want.
Shalom,
Brian
