What If?

What if?..

What if Gabriel, the angel sent to Joseph, the shepherds’ announcing angel & company, had refused to speak? And what if the shepherds themselves had brushed off the announcement and revelation of Messiah’s coming (Matthew 1, & Luke 2), &/or had carried on as if nothing extraordinary had happened, &/or had remained silent following His birth? Well, maybe “the rocks [would have cried] out” the news, as Jesus told the complaining Pharisees at His triumphal entry (Luke 19:39-40). Or maybe God would have used another means [see: Balaam’s donkey (Num. 22:21-31), or Jonah’s “fish dinner” (Jonah 1-2)]. Maybe…

But postpartum, God chose to entrust “the foolish things” (believers) with the precious good news that saves the hungry and oppressed, and confounds — and even saves — a few of the wise (Matt. 1:21-23; I Cor. 1:26-29).

So…this Christmas, let’s let the Season’s Reason strengthen us to go tell it on the mountain — with psalms, hymns, & spiritual songs…and with our actions (Eph. 5:18-21; Matt. 5:16)! What if that happened?… 🎼“Glo-o-o-o-o-o,-o-o-o-o-o, -o-o-o-o-oria, in excelsis deo!”
