This past Sunday, the last one of the year, willing participants at our church pulled a word written on an index card out of a basket. That word then becomes a sort of focus point for their faith journey for the next year.
The exercise initially provides for a bit of fun, as we get to watch quite the assortment of facial expressions, accompanied by various vocal sounds—from grimaces to glowers to grins, from grunts to gasps to guffaws.
Over the course of the year, many of us have found our word to be challenging, annoying, frustrating, but mostly helpful, acting as sort of a mooring, a stabilizer, a motivator, and even perhaps an inspiration, hopefully moving us forward in faith and a growing spiritual maturity.
My word for 2025? “Resolve” — for me, a determined commitment to “press in and press on”, i.e. to, more than ever before, love the Lord God with everything I’ve got, trustingly and devotedly abandoned to His will, for His glory and pleasure.
What might be your word for 2o25? Here’s a jumpstart: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” ~ Psalm 119:105
Once you find a word, then all you have to do is…honor it, keep it, live it out…nothing to it, right? (oh, there’s a word for that too — baloney!). Yet, His word trumps even that: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13).
So go ahead, try on a new word — we’re rootin’ for ya!
